This past Sunday, March 29th, my wife Marie and I were interviewed by Oceans Church regarding my daughter Sarah’s miraculous healing from inoperable brain cancer.
Oceans Church is a wonderful, Spirit-filled church in Irvine, Southern California. We began attending there about a year ago. They are rapidly growing, filled with mostly young people, and a few older folks like Marie and I. Anyway, at the start of each service, they like to show a short video testimony from someone in the church – it’s called “My Story”.
We have been watching these My Stories during past Sunday services, and I thought to myself – we could do this! Although we have many amazing stories of how God has worked in our lives and the lives of our family members, about a year ago, God brought my daughter Sarah through a very traumatic time with brain cancer.
After being diagnosed, she was put on regular chemo treatments. She is a single mom with two teenage daughters and has a hair styling business (sarahthehairdoctor.com). Month after month, she would push on, getting the chemo treatments, feeling sick, but still keeping the faith and believing God for a miracle. Our small group also prayed daily, as did other friends and relatives. We stood on the verse “Jesus is the same, today, yesterday, and forever” (Hebrews 3:18). We believed that Jesus still heals today the same as He did when He walked the earth 2,000 years ago. Does he always heal? No, we knew that. But we believed that if we pray, He hears us. And if we persevered, and kept on knocking, seeking and asking, we knew He would hear us and heal Sarah.
After 3 1/2 years, her clinical trial at Hoag Hospital came to an end. They told her she would have to be transferred to City of Hope, and they would continue treatment. Hoag did some closing scans and blood work before ending Sarah’s treatment, and these showed that the cancer was beginning to spread down into her neck and spine. Weeks went by while Sarah was waiting to be admitted to City of Hope. We thought, “This is terrible. Weeks with no treatment, and the cancer is already spreading, according to Hoag!”
She finally went in on a Monday to City of Hope. The admitting nurse looked over the scans and blood work from Hoag, and murmured that these don’t look good. But then she said, “Don’t worry. We will start fresh here, do our own scans and blood work tomorrow, and assign a great team of doctors to your case.” Sarah went in on Tuesday, the next day, and was put through a battery of scans and tests. Tuesday afternoon, she came over and told us she was exhausted, but hopeful. Maybe they could reverse the spread and help? she thought.
The very next day, she received a phone call from the team’s chief doctor. He told her, “We are baffled. We don’t see a trace of cancer in any of our tests – not in the scans, nor in the blood work. We are all baffled”. Sarah replied, “You mean God did all the heavy lifting?” The doctor told her they don’t understand it, but they will keep looking. Meanwhile, she would be transferred to a nutrition specialist to begin a healthy diet. She called us and told us, “I can’t tell you over the phone. I have to come over and tell you in person!” When she arrived, she shared with us what had happened and what the chief doctor had said. We were so happy! Sarah called her pastor at Calvary Chapel, gave him the good news, and shared her story at that Sunday’s service.
Just when we thought all was lost, and she was being transferred to City of Hope, God reached down and healed her! And in doing so, He not only freed her from the cancer, but he baffled a whole team of doctors! Since then, Sarah has been healthier than ever, stronger in her faith, and a great mom to her teenage daughters. And this story has been shared with churches, in book form, and is helping many others going through rough times not to despair, but to believe and trust God for whatever comes.
He heard us, and He did, in His time and in His way. He strengthened Sarah’s faith and all of us during those tough 3 years. She is now stronger in her faith than ever, and so are we, and many of our friends. She would say, “God’s got this. If He takes me I am fine with that. And if He keeps me here, I will carry out His will for my life”.

Thank you for watching. I hope this was an encouragement to you. God is our loving Father, and He does hear and listen to our prayers. His Word tells us to persevere and not to give up. Keep on knocking, keep on asking, keep on seeking. We did that for 3 1/2 years – our family, our small group, and our larger circle of friends. We prayed every night for the Lord to reach down and heal Sarah. And He did – in such an amazing way!
Our God is an awesome God!
Paul and Marie
